A Villager and a Citizen

By: Ihsan Nur Iman Faris

Long, long ago
In a foothills of a still active volcano
Far away from the nearest city
There was a couple of farmer
Having a small field cultivated by many plantations
Living in a tiny house
Being happy with their life at that moment

The farmers usually sold their harvest to the villages nearby
Big city didn’t want to take their fruits and vegetables
Because of the high standard applied
But it’s okay for them
They were very happy and thankful with their current condition

Their plantations sometimes were threatened by many things
It’s not a big deal,
Together they could get rid of those problems
But everything was changed
When the volcano was erupted

People were evacuated and sought for shelters
Boiled sticky red liquid called lava
Burned everything, include the farmers’ field and tiny house

Finally the eruption stopped
But not the catastrophe for people and the farmers
The farmers looked for their field and dream house
But there was nothing but rubles and ashes
They were in a great grieve
They gazed at nothing,
Didn’t know what to do

A year had been passed
The couple still didn’t know what to do

Came, the moment of truth, the moment of decision
The woman decided that she was going to go to the city,
Seeking for betterment
The man was confused;
He didn’t want to leave
He wanted to stay as a villager with his simplistic life
Then it couldn’t be helped,
They were separated by different point of views

Six years had passed
The man had been withstanding painful days
Of living in a land burned by lava
Every day, he cleaned the field and rebuilt his tiny house
All by himself
Until shades of gray turn into brown again
He sometimes wandered to what happened to the woman
Who became a citizen
He thought she must be very happy,
Immediately after she left him and their promised dreamland

Years by years had been passed
The burned land turned heavenly
Plantations grew even bigger and fresher than before the land was burned
The man became a farmer again
A successful farmer
Not only could he sell his products to the villages nearby,
But then the city also accepted fruits and vegetable rejected long time ago

One day the farmer was going to sell his harvests to the city
There he saw a very familiar entity
Who didn’t realize that the man was watching
The man took time to realize that it was the woman,
The woman was changing
She put flashy things all over her body
And now having smiles that could astonish people
Her talk was more convincing than before
She seemed to be happy
But the man couldn’t tell
Whether it’s a good or bad transformation
Not long, there was an apparently
Good looking trait and appearance boy approached her
But the man couldn’t tell whether the boy was an angel or a devil
Those citizens went away

After the farmer unpacked the customers’ wants
He went back to the village
On the way back home
he looked up at the vast blue sky
Smiling...
