EWC Writing Competition 4 : The Phenomena of Social Network

Ok. No more long bridging for the post. Below is my writing for the 4th EWC Writing Competition. I won the competition, but please don't ask how many people registered for that :p. There are sooooo many grammatical errors, sorry for the inconvenient. Oh yeah, one more thing, I am still waiting for the certificate and the merchandises anyway :p.

The Phenomena of Social Network

Nowadays, I think there are no people who don’t know what social network is. Almost all people from different social classes and ages have the account of Friendster, Facebook, or Twitter. The data show that social network such as Facebook becomes the most-visited site in Indonesia, it excel the number of visitor of search engine site such us Google.

The main function of social network actually is to connect people. By using social network, people from different place can be connected by just using internet connection as the ‘main bridge’. Teenager usually uses social network as the place where they pour their feelings and expressions, for example when they have problem regarding to love, when they feel angry, or when they feel sad. Another function of social network is for promotion. Many products are promoted in Facebook or Twitter. For promotion purpose, social network
is very effective, because many people can see the product which people (producer) produce, with the most considered-reason is the promotion fee on social network which is relatively free; people just have to make the account of their products.

Those functions mentioned above are the main reasons why people use social network, but actually the usage of social network which become phenomena in this era is that when social network turn into the form of people power. Social network can turn into the form of people power because it is easy to gather people who have same point of view toward a case, due to easy access of social network. People easily join a group, they can give comments and opinions toward a case freely, and information is easily spread out among people in social network, those reasons make people power in social network is easily grown up. There are some examples of people power which were formed in social network and had given big influence to the cases which were faced. The first example is when Bibit-Chandra case was the headline of many national newspapers. The supports from people on Facebook were just like the booster for the government to solve the case quickly, because we could see that before people made that kind of movement, the government hardly found the effective way to solve Bibit-Chandra’s case. Another big movement which was triggered by social network was the revolution of Egypt. Maybe it sounds too much if we correlate social network to the revolution of Egypt, but actually it is true. The revolution of Egypt began to dare to rise up when people made some group or forum in social network. Some of Egyptians made some discussion and critics toward the dictatorial leadership and unfairness which were happened in Egypt, and then more people had same point of view join the forum and made the movement bigger and bigger. The people power in social network was like the igniter of the ‘blazing’ demonstration which became the starting point of revolution of democracy in Egypt. If we realize and analyze more, we will find that something which we consider as only for-fun think such as social network can be something very important and useful. So from now on let’s be more critical and wise in use anything.
